Scene Study Performance Camp (Annie JR.)

ABOUT:

Jump into the world of Annie Jr. for a fun-filled week of acting, singing, and dancing! Bring characters like Annie, Daddy Warbucks, and Miss Hannigan to life as you explore scenes, learn
choreography, and build your performance skills in a supportive, high-energy environment.

Students will learn two iconic songs—Hard Knock Life and I Think I’m Gonna Like It Here—while working on expression, movement, and singing in character. Through engaging scene work and group numbers, everyone will have opportunities to participate, take creative risks, and grow their confidence.

We’ll also get a fun behind-the-scenes look at costumes with a special collaboration with Duluth’s Cool People Sew!

The week wraps up with a scene study performance for family and friends.

Performing Arts Summer Staff

Vicky Ryden, Theatre Director

Vicky Ryden comes to Art Hall after 23 years of educational theatre and retiring twice! Her lifelong love of working with kids began in earnest when she was in the 6th grade, coaching cheerleaders. Mrs. Ryden has been on the field, on the stage, and in the classroom in one form or another since then, whether teaching kids in creative ways in Sunday school, kids’ church, or as Middle School Drama Director for both Providence and Perimeter Schools. She loves to emphasize Process over Product, and is grateful for the wise people who helped instill that in her.

A graduate in theatre and music from Western Kentucky University, Mrs. Ryden is deliriously happy to share this project with her brilliant daughter and assistant Lindsay Ryden. She is twice blessed to have the talents and input of her dashing husband Paul Ryden, and doesn’t know what she would do without his contributions in editing, sound, and sanity!

She knows Whose show it really is, and is grateful to God for every good thing. Thanks to Julie Ann McKevitt for producing and choreographing Annie JR. It’s a joy to work with you.

Lindsay Ryden, Artistic & Assistant Director for Theatre

Lindsay Ryden is a freelance painter living and working in Duluth, GA. A graduate of Savannah College of Art & Design, Lindsay specializes in portraiture. An avid supporter of the dramatic arts (and a big fan of the middle school contingency), Lindsay is honored to assistant direct alongside her mother, Vicky Ryden. You can follow Lindsay’s art on Instagram here.

Julie Ann McKevitt, Camp Director & Choreographer

Julie Ann McKevitt is a visual artist in Duluth, GA. She is known for her colorful, detailed paintings as well as being the founder of the Georgia-based arts non-profit Paint Love.

Julie has been creating arts programming for youth and families for over 12 years and has been painting for over two decades. She has had the honor of painting a large-scale mural on the Atlanta BeltLine and has shared her love of art with young people and their families throughout the Southeast.

In 2014, after witnessing a great need for artistic outlets for youth, Julie, along with her husband Aaron and a strong community of support, began Paint Love. Paint Love brings extraordinary arts programming to youth facing poverty and trauma. The organization has grown into one of the most sought-after non-profit art programs for youth in Atlanta. Julie believes in the therapeutic power art can have and strives to give young people the ability to grow through art.

While it has been six years since Julie stepped away from the day-to-day of Paint Love and moved to Duluth, she is now excited to start something new with Art Hall. Julie continues to champion the work of Paint Love, and as any true artist, she has a steady stream of side projects, including: painting in her home studio, serving on the Duluth Public Arts Commission, and using her dance minor to lead group fitness classes. (You will also spot her doing some theatre choreography this summer!)
